Dilboy Humanitarian Award
The Dilboy Humanitarian Award is one of the highest honors presented by the Hellenic Association of Somerville, recognizing individuals whose lives reflect extraordinary service, compassion, and impact on others.
A Legacy of Honor
This award is named for George A. Dilboy — Somerville’s hometown hero and the first Greek American to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest military distinction for valor.
Born in Alatsata, Dilboy immigrated to Somerville, where he became part of the early Greek community that helped establish the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in 1916.
His life was marked by remarkable courage and sacrifice:
-
Fought in the Balkan Wars at just 16
-
Served in the Mexican Border Campaign
-
Gave his life on July 18, 1918, during the Second Battle of the Marne
For his actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for “gallantry above and beyond the call of duty,” and is laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
