SUNDAY SCHOOL
Our Orthodox Christian tradition is incredibly deep and beautifully rich. The Dormition Church’s Sunday School Program enables students to wrestle with difficult questions and explore some wonderful answers that will provide young people with an anchor in an often unsettled world. It is our goal that the Sunday School Program students will come to appreciate just how much the Orthodox Faith strengths, encourages, and guides them in everyday challenges.
Fr. Alexander Schmemann, the great theologian, pointed out that we are no longer living in a Christianized world; in other words, our society has lost most of its markers that point to “the Church as the way to the Kingdom.” If we do not teach our children to follow Christ, therefore, the world will teach them not to. Our children need a strong bond with their Orthodox faith to navigate the troubled waters of today’s society.

In St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, with the ancient Olympic games in mind, the Apostle compares the spiritual life to athletics (1 Corinthians 9:24-27): Just as athletes train hard and long to win prizes, so should Christians approach the spiritual life. And with any such endeavor, seeds planted early bear much fruit later. Likewise, with this in mind, the Dormition Sunday Church School has recently refreshed its curriculum for the new ecclesiastical year with all new materials and lessons.

Please enroll your children this year, so that they can learn the basics of our beautiful faith and learn from the teachers and each other. Through new lessons and interesting and engaging materials, the Sunday Church School teachers will help teach the fundamentals of our faith, so that all of us together can say: “I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7).
