Omiros Greek School
ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
The purpose of the Omiros Greek School is for every child to learn the Greek language and, in plain words, our history, mythology and Greek culture. To learn to love Greece. To feel proud of his/her origins. To learn about what Greece has offered to the world (democracy, philosophy, theater, rhetoric, etc.). When our children finish Greek School, they will have embraced Hellenism in their hearts.
The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church Greek School was established in Somerville in the early 20th century when the Church first opened its doors in 1916. Through the years it has provided an academic Greek education to thousands of students from Kindergarten through 6th grade. From the first Greek School teacher and parish priest – the +Rev. Fr. Konstantinos Kacoyanis in 1916 – through to the present-day teachers, they have all brought their combined love of Greek language and youth to fruition with the sharing of their knowledge. The strong programs of the past decades that educated so many students have now been enhanced to bring the current curriculum into the new digital informational age.
*****The Omiros School basically functions as a once per week teaching Program on Wednesdays 4:00pm - 6:30pm OR Saturdays 9:30am - 12:30pm.
The Omiros School Program is strong and multi-faceted and in addition to the Greek language, it includes the comprehensive teaching of Hellenic culture, traditional dances, songs, games, music and theatre through the extensive use of audiovisual materials.
